From: Vergne, Barolo, Italy
Varietal: Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir
Taste: The wine's bouquet is inviting and complex, featuring subtle aromas of fresh strawberries and raspberries intertwined with hints of grapefruit and nectarine zest. Floral notes of delicate rose petals and light herbal nuances of fennel and chopped herbs add depth to its aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine presents a lively mix of fresh red berries and citrus zest, underscored by a pronounced mineral undertone and vibrant, racy acidity that lends a refreshing character.
Pairing: A classic Italian match is fritters di calamari, with the lightly battered and fried squid complementing the wine’s citrus zest and crisp finish. For a modern touch, salmon crudo with citrus dressing pairs seamlessly with the wine’s berry and grapefruit elements, enhancing the fish's delicate flavors. A roasted vegetable risotto featuring a medley of zucchini, bell peppers, and asparagus harmonizes with the wine’s acidity and highlights its mineral undertones. The wine’s floral and lively profile also works well with a sushi and sashimi platter, elevating the freshness of the fish with added complexity. Shrimp scampi with lemon and garlic is another excellent pairing, with the wine’s minerality and citrus notes brightening the dish's flavors. Lastly, a savory mushroom tart brings out the wine's herbal characteristics and adds an earthy balance that pairs beautifully with its refreshing acidity.

About: G.D. Vajra is a distinguished family-owned winery in Vergne, the highest village within the Barolo commune of Piedmont, Italy. The estate's modern history began in 1968 when a 15-year-old Aldo Vaira was sent to his grandparents' farm in Barolo after participating in political protests in Turin. This experience ignited his passion for viticulture, leading him to take over the family vineyards. In 1971, Aldo adopted organic farming practices, making G.D. Vajra one of the first estates in the region to do so. This dedication to organic practices was officially recognized in 2019 when all of the estate’s vineyards received organic certification.
Today, the winery is managed by Aldo and his wife Milena, along with their children Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro, who are all actively involved in the estate's operations. They are known for producing elegant wines that reflect the unique terroir of their vineyards.
