From: Paarl, South Africa
Varietal: Pinotage, Grenache
Taste: The 2022 pours a deep, ruby color. On the nose, inviting aromas of ripe red berries - cherry & raspberry - and plum intertwine with subtle layers of spice and dark florals. The palate follows with a well-structured balance of flavors—juicy dark red fruit melds seamlessly with notes of dark chocolate and a touch of vanilla from oak aging. Smooth tannins and a velvety mouthfeel lead to a lingering finish, leaving traces of fruit and gentle spice that invite another sip.
Pairing: For Thanksgiving or Christmas, consider classic roast turkey with herb stuffing, where the wine's berry notes harmonize with the savory herbs, or honey-glazed ham, which brings out the touch of vanilla and dark fruit in the Pinotage. Prime rib with roasted root vegetables also makes an excellent pairing, as the wine's smooth tannins balance the meat’s richness. Beyond holiday feasts, try it with a slow-cooked beef brisket or pork shoulder, as the smoky oak in the Pinotage enhances the smoky, tender meat. For a lighter option, mushroom risotto highlights the wine's earthy undertones, while grilled lamb chops offer a robust pairing, bringing out the wine’s spice and depth.

About: Lievland Vineyards, located on the western slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains between Stellenbosch and Paarl in South Africa, has a history stretching back to 1715 when the farm was first granted to ex-soldier Jurie Hanekom. The estate’s historic manor house, built in 1865, is a landmark of its legacy. Over time, Lievland became home to several notable figures, including a Latvian baroness who managed the farm and a winemaker who gained acclaim for crafting an iconic Shiraz, which brought attention to the estate. Another innovative individual at Lievland was among the first in the region to barrel-ferment Chenin Blanc, establishing a tradition that has become common practice.
