Description

From: Aghione, Corsica, France
Varietal: Niellucciu, Sciaccarellu, Merlot, Syrah

Taste: The wine pours a ruby red with slight purple reflections at the rim. On the nose, there's a lively mix of red and dark fruit. Expect aromas of ripe cherries, wild raspberries, and blackberries, with hints of Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and thyme. As it opens up, spicy black pepper and a touch of licorice emerge. On the palate, it has a balanced structure and firm tannins, with a bright, peppery liveliness. It features a roundness and a soft, juicy core of red fruit with darker berries and a hint of smokiness.

Pairing: Pair the wine’s bright acidity with dishes that have tang and freshness, such as tomato-based sauces, vinaigrettes, or citrus-infused Mediterranean cuisine, making it an excellent partner for ratatouille, pasta with red sauces, or grilled seafood with lemon. Its medium body and soft tannins pair best with lighter proteins such as roasted chicken, duck, or herb-marinated pork, while its peppery spice adds depth to simple grilled dishes. The wine’s herbal and floral notes also complement Mediterranean flavors, making it a great match for dishes featuring rosemary, thyme, fennel, or warm spices like paprika and cumin. Avoid dishes with excessive chili heat, as high alcohol or firm tannins can intensify the burn. Instead, pair it with spiced but not overwhelmingly hot dishes, such as chorizo pasta, Moroccan tagines, or paprika-seasoned grilled meats.

About: Domaine Vetriccie, situated in the commune of Aghione on Corsica's east coast, serves as a testament to the island's rich viticultural heritage. Established in 1966 by the Barcelo family, the estate spans approximately 120 hectares in the heart of the AOP Vin de Corse appellation. The name "Vetriccie" translates to "wicker," recognizing the abundant wicker plants that grow near the vineyards.

The Barcelo family's winemaking began with the patriarch, Patrick Barcelo, who acquired the property in the mid-20th century. Under his guidance, the estate established its foundational vineyards, focusing on both indigenous and international grape varieties. This strategic blend aimed to capture the unique terroir of Corsica while appealing to a wide range of wine enthusiasts.
