From: Rocks District, WA
Blend: Syrah
Critical Acclaim:
95 points Wine Spectator Insider: "Offers elegantly complex tiers of blueberry, black olive and river rock accents that build tension and race toward medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2032."
97 points International Wine Report. Matt Reynvaan has become one of the best, if not the best, winemakers in the state of Washington and his superb Syrahs showcase what he does best - age-worthy, complex, and layered wines from the Rocks district. His “In The Rocks” Syrah hits you in the face with a delectable, complex and constantly changing nose of freshly brewed black tea, blueberry compote, uncooked bacon fat, ground black peppercorn and grated grapefruit zest. The structure of the wine is practically perfect with a core of black fruits, green olives, sagebrush, roasted leg of lamb and a hint of grapefruit pith. I cannot wait to see how this wine evolves over the next decade or so.
From the winery. “In The Rocks” is our first vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley, located in Milton-Freewater, Oregon between a cherry orchard and En Cerise Vineyard. Described as the most unique terroir in the United States, this dried-up river bed contains large smooth river sized rocks reminiscent of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The soils of this vineyard are the result of an alluvial fan formed by the Walla Walla River about 15,000 years ago. This ancient riverbed of rocky soils is a world class site to grow grapes. We believe that with this terroir we are able to create unique, well balanced and very special wines.
