From: Côtes-du-Rhône, France
Varietal: 100% Grenache
Taste: The 2019 Julien Mus Rouge, Côtes du Rhône Rouge, boasts a deep ruby color with an alluring nose of ripe red cherries, raspberries, and blackberries, complemented by subtle notes of white pepper, dried herbs, and a hint of earthiness. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine displays a harmonious balance of juicy red fruit flavors, velvety tannins, and refreshing acidity. The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering notes of red fruit and a touch of spice.
Pairing: The versatility of the 2019 Julien Mus Rouge makes it an ideal companion for a wide range of dishes. Pair this delightful Grenache with grilled or roasted meats such as lamb, pork, or beef, as well as Mediterranean-inspired dishes like ratatouille or eggplant parmesan (see below for Martha Rose Shulman’s Eggplant and Tomato Gratin recipe!). The wine's bright acidity and soft tannins also make it a great match for a simple charcuterie board or aged cheeses like Manchego or Gouda.
All in all, this 100% Grenache Côtes du Rhône Rouge is a remarkable and captivating expression of this classic grape variety. Its generous fruit-forward profile, balanced acidity, and velvety tannins make it a must-try for fans of Rhône wines and those seeking to explore the potential of single-varietal Grenache. Don't miss the opportunity to experience this exceptional wine from the heart of the Côtes du Rhône region.
Eggplant and Tomato Gratin
By Martha Rose Shulman
About. After completing his viticultural and winemaking studies at Beaune, Julien Mus returned to his family domaine on the outskirts of the Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Until then the grapes from the domaine had been sold off to the local co-op. The domaine consists of four hectares of AOC Côtes du Rhône and six hectares of Vin de Pays designated vineyards around Courthezon, to which Julien has added a small plot of AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape, located between those of Font de Michelle and Vieux Télégraphe, near the south-eastern border of the appellation.
Julien is still honing his winemaking style, but his wines all have very pure, expressive fruit and have already attracted attention and high scores from the “Wine Advocate.” His Côtes du Rhône is 100% Grenache and is evocative and powerful, with dried fruit and rich pruneaux notes and benefits from the wonderful balance of this vintage.
