From: La Mancha, Spain
Blend: 50% Verdejo, 50% Airén
Tasting Notes: Bright aromas of lemon-lime citrus, crisp apple, white peach, and Asian pear come into focus, which touches of fresh grass and fennel adding complexity in the background. This wine has a crisp, friendly palate that brings the zesty citrus and bright stone fruit elements from the palate into beautiful balance.
Pairing: This wine is the perfect pairing for a sunny spring day, whether you plan to enjoy it with a meal or not. Bring it to your next picnic or beach day and serve it with chips/veggies and dip with a fresh sandwich or salad. It would also be great with white fish, crab cakes, or basil fried rice. Following the old adage of “what grows together goes together,” Pisto is also a great, veggie-packed pairing option; this is a traditional Spanish starter or side-dish from La Mancha consisting of cooked and fried vegetables such as tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, and courgettes. You could even have it as a side along with Mark Bittman’s recipe for Grilled Fish With Pimentón Aioli.
About. This wine is called “Amigo de la Tierra,” which translates to “friend of the earth.” The philosophy of the grower is that the earth needs its friends and the friends need the earth. Their organic and sustainable wines are not only good quality, but they’re made with the people who make them in mid.
Organic wines are grown all over Spain, especially in the drier and more isolated communities like La Mancha or Jumilla. These regions offer a wide variety of climates and sub-regions that produce grapes with great quality and style. The grapes for Amigo de la Tierra are grown in a part of Spain's central southern plain known as La Mancha. This area is a plateau which is being gently pushed and raised from the east. The gentle mountains to the east are the watershed for the region, but instead of a great river and valleys on the surface, the river Guadiana largely flows underground.
This means that the dry climate is perfect for organic farming, while there is access to subterranean water which allows for drip irrigation which can sustain the plants throughout the summers, which can be hot and dry.
This wine is a blend of 50% Verdejo and 50% Airén grown on low-yielding vines. The grapes were gently pressed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel.
