From: Bierzo, Spain
Varietal: Godello
Winemaker Notes: A wine of a straw yellow color, clean, bright and with medium intensity. Very expressive on the nose with notes of fresh white flowers and fruit. The passage through the mouth is fresh and persistent, but without losing the balanced acidity typical of Godello.
Critical Acclaim: JS 91 James Suckling
A godello with some nice phenolic structure to the zesty, round palate. Medium to full body, with lemon zest, mineral and some oyster shells followed by a mouthwatering finish.
Taste: This friendly white wine is delightful and offers a refreshing and balanced drinking experience. On the nose, it presents floral notes of fresh white flowers and fruit, which are followed by a bright, zesty palate of lemon zest, mineral, and oyster shells. The wine finishes with a mouthwatering, persistent acidity that is typical of Godello.
Pairing: In terms of pairing, this wine is a great match for a wide range of dishes. Consider serving it with fresh seafood, such as clams or shrimp, prepared in a traditional Galician style. The bright acidity of the wine will complement the briny and salty flavors of the seafood, creating a harmonious balance. Grilled poultry and fish are also successful pairing ideas, where the wine's bright acidity and fruit notes will complement the dish's smoky flavors, while the wine's medium body will hold up to the dish's bold flavors.
For a regional pairing, try pairing this wine with a traditional Spanish seafood dish like grilled octopus with lemon and olive oil. The fresh acidity of the wine will cut through the richness of the octopus and complement the lemon flavors. Alternatively, pair it with a Spanish-style paella that is rich in seafood and herbs for a perfect match.
In general, the Emilio Moro Polvorete Godello is also a great match for sushi and sashimi. The clean and refreshing acidity of the wine pairs perfectly with the delicate flavors of raw fish and adds a citrusy kick to the dish.
Also, try pairing the 2020 Emilio Moro Polvorete Godello with a vegetable stir-fry. The wine's fresh acidity and fruit notes will complement the dish's bright flavors, while the wine's medium body will hold up to the dish's bold flavors. It also pairs well with light pasta dishes, salads, and vegetable-based appetizers.
For a fresh, vegetarian pairing, try the Emilio Moro Polvorete Godello with a quinoa and vegetable salad (check out our recipe suggestion below). The wine's acidity and fresh flavors complement the earthiness of the quinoa and the sweetness of the vegetables. It also pairs well with vegetable-based soups, such as gazpacho or tomato soup.

Now, this leader of quality wine production in Ribera del Duero, has ventured into the white wine world with their Emilio Moro Polvorete Godello 2020 from Bierzo, Spain (2020 was the first official release of the project). The winery, which has been in the Moro family for three generations, has gained critical acclaim for its red wines made from the Tinto Fino variety. However, their foray into white wines has not gone unnoticed, with James Suckling rating their first vintage of Godello 91 points.
Polvorete is made with 100% Godello grapes, a variety known for producing fresh and expressive white wines. The grapes for Polvorete are sourced from young vines in El Bierzo, planted in calcareous clay soils at an elevation of over 750 metres above sea level. The vineyards are cultivated using local traditional agriculture methods, and the grapes are destemmed and gently pressed before fermenting in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The resulting wine is a straw yellow color with medium intensity, and expresses notes of fresh white flowers and fruit on the nose. The palate is fresh and persistent, with a balanced acidity typical of the Godello variety.
Bodegas Emilio Moro's venture into white wines began when the third generation of the family, led by Javier, Rubi, and Fabiola, sought out the area within Spain capable of producing the best white wine. They settled in Bierzo in 2016 and have been making wines there with the Godello variety ever since.

The Bierzo region, located in the northwest of Castilla y Leon, is best known for its red wines made from the Mencia grape variety. However, white wines are also produced in Bierzo, predominantly from Dona Blanca, Godello, and Palomino grapes. The region's proximity to the Atlantic Ocean has a profound effect on its climate, with cooler temperatures during the growing season compared to more inland areas. Bierzo's soil is different from that found in other parts of Castilla y Leon, with a predominance of slate and granite, which favors the Mencia vines and helps produce wines with a distinct mineral character.
Verdelho, also known as Godello or Verdelho Branco, is a grape variety associated with the stenciled bottles of Madeira. The variety produces vibrant citrus and pear notes on the nose, with a light, powdery phenolic texture on the back-palate. It is grown throughout Portugal and the Azores and has been successfully cultivated in the southern hemisphere. In Australia, it is more reminiscent of citrus and tropical fruits and is often encountered as a dry white wine.
