Description
From: Piemonte, Italy
Varietal: Nebbiolo
Taste: The nose reveals a striking harmony of vinous red fruits, accentuated by notes of perfectly ripened strawberry and savory herbs (fennel). The palate echoes the nose's promise, showcasing Nebbiolo's structure, acidity, and length. Red & black cherries and sweet spice pop in the depth of fruit on the palate and showcase vibrant energy, purity of fruit, and balance. Fine and silky tannins hold all that supple, perfectly ripe fruit to a lithe, lingering finish.
Pairing: Like most Nebbiolo wines, the 2022 Fratelli Revello Langhe Nebbiolo brings a compelling mix of complexity and balance, a charm that opens up a broad range of pairing opportunities. This wine's beautiful harmony of vibrant acidity, velvety tannins, and generous fruit profile makes it an exceptional companion for a variety of dishes.
1. Traditional Italian Cuisine: As with many wines, the 2022 Fratelli Revello Langhe Nebbiolo pairs exceptionally well with local dishes from its native region, Piemonte. Try it with "Brasato al Barolo", a classic Piedmont dish of beef braised in Barolo wine, or the rich and luxurious "Tajarin", a thin and rich egg pasta often served with a savory ragù or decadent truffle butter. The rich, hearty flavors of these dishes will beautifully complement the Nebbiolo's high tannins and acidity, creating a harmonious balance on the palate. Another classic pairing is Agnolotti del Plin, a Piedmontese pasta stuffed with a meat filling, served with a simple butter and sage sauce. The wine's bright red fruit notes and herbaceous undertones will complement the dish's meaty richness and herbal elements (we’re sharing a recipe below for Fettuccine With Sausage and Fried Sage, the pairing inspired by these notes and the herbal element in the Fratelli Revello 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo).
2. Game Meats: Game meats like venison or wild boar, whether roasted or in a stew, are great matches. These meats have a deep, earthy flavor profile that matches well with the wine's fruit.
3. Rich Poultry and Rabbit: If red meat isn't your preference, richer poultry dishes can also complement this Nebbiolo wonderfully. Duck, either roasted or in a confit preparation, is a fantastic option. Rabbit, with its subtly sweet meat, also pairs wonderfully, especially when cooked in a rich, tomato-based sauce.
4. Vegetarian Pairings: For a vegetarian option, consider dishes with mushrooms or truffles, which echo the earthy tones found in the wine. A mushroom risotto or a truffle pasta would be a delightful pairing, offering a balance of earthiness and creaminess to match the wine's structure and acidity.

About. Wine has the magical ability to encapsulate the very essence of the earth it's derived from, communicating stories of heritage, meticulous craftsmanship, and nature's bounty through its subtle notes and complex character. In our pursuit to explore the world's finest wines, we turn our attention to the heart of Italy, to the rolling hills of Piedmont, where we discover a spectacular expression of Nebbiolo - the 2022 Fratelli Revello Langhe Nebbiolo.
The Revelation of Revello
The story of Revello wines is one of family tradition, hard work, and dedication. Rooted in the post-war era, the Revello family found their beginning as tenants of a farmhouse in the parish of San Martino di La Morra. The 1960s marked a critical juncture in their journey with the replanting of vineyards, laying the groundwork for the eventual debut of the first Barolo by Giovanni Revello & Figli.
Continued growth saw the Revello family extending their vineyard footprint, adding the Gattera and Conca sites. By the 1990s, the responsibility of continuing the family legacy was taken up by brothers Carlo and Lorenzo (Enzo) Revello. In a pivotal decision to ensure smooth generational transition, the brothers decided to divide the company. Enzo Revello established the Fratelli Revello winery in Annunziata, where he collaborates with his children, Simone and Elena, to create distinctive wines.
The first Fratelli Revello Barolo, unveiled in 1993, showcased a blend of fruits from all their vineyards. The winery's identity was further solidified with the introduction of four single cru-inspired wines, signaling their ability to craft single-site wines of gorgeous quality. Today, the Fratelli Revello wines are a testament to rigorous vineyard selection and organic farming principles, resulting in wines that exude a fruit-forward generosity and approachable character.
A Fresh Perspective on Langhe Nebbiolo
The 2022 Fratelli Revello Langhe Nebbiolo is a perfect embodiment of the Revello philosophy - highlighting generosity of fruit and tannin, while retaining an originality that is both refreshing and familiar. Drawing from vineyards located in Annunziata, the grapes used to craft this Nebbiolo are a reflection of their unique terroir - calcareous and clayey soil, bathed in the warmth of the south-eastern sun at an altitude of 230 to 250 meters above sea level.
The intricate winemaking process involves hand-harvesting the grapes, followed by careful fermentation and maceration in stainless steel tanks. This process allows for the preservation of the wine's natural fruit flavors, while also encouraging the conversion of malic acid to softer lactic acid, known as malolactic fermentation. Post-fermentation, the wine is aged in used French oak barriques for 12 to 14 months before it is finally bottled. This patient maturation imparts a beautiful balance to the wine, adding layers of depth and complexity to its profile.
La Morra: A Picture of Perfection
Home to the Fratelli Revello winery, La Morra holds a significant place in the Barolo wine landscape. Producing around 25% of all Barolo, this region is known for its lighter, more aromatic, and elegant wines, making it a key player in the creation of perfectly balanced blends. As we delve deeper into the characteristics of La Morra, we uncover similarities with Burgundy’s Cote d’Or - organized along a long slope that runs north-south, facing east or southeast, this region offers the ideal conditions for vineyards to thrive.
La Morra's soils are primarily Tortonian in nature, with more sand and less limestone than other Barolo regions, contributing to the less tannic character of the wines. Additionally, the presence of more clay aids in water retention, making dry vintages perform exceptionally well in this region. It is within this exceptional terroir that the Nebbiolo grapes for the 2022 Fratelli Revello Langhe Nebbiolo grow, imbibing the very essence of the soil, climate, and topography.
Concluding Notes
The 2022 Fratelli Revello Langhe Nebbiolo is more than just a bottle of wine. It is a celebration of the Revello family's commitment to organic farming, an ode to the fertile soils of La Morra, and a testament to the boundless potential of the Nebbiolo varietal. In the words of Enzo Revello, "I want to allow the fruit to talk to the drinker," and with each sip of this outstanding Nebbiolo, the fruit indeed narrates a compelling tale, one that is sure to leave a lasting impression on your palate.
