The 2014 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice is full and soft with great fruit density. This is a nicely balanced wine that shows more intensity than I might have expected from this cool vintage that generally produced thinner wines in comparison. There is sweet, supple spice on the close. This elegant Barolo would go nicely with a beef and pork shank cassoulet. The wine has the fiber to age beautifully, but it will also show nicely in the medium-term, for those looking for a more accessible Barolo.

The 2014 growing season was cool and wet, but Walter Fissore is a master of managing his vines, having worked the Ravera cru for more than a quarter-century. This feels fully ripe, fresh and high-toned, with snappy red-fruit flavors girded by powerful, ferrous tannins. Mouthwatering acidity amplifies the berry flavors as notes of dried herbs and pressed florals emerge.

Fragrant blue flower, tilled earth, new leather, baking spice and wild berry aromas form a lovely fragrance. On the polished, full-bodied palate, smooth tannins and bright acidity elegantly support juicy raspberry, strawberry compote, clove and licorice.

This red is juicy, offering cherry, raspberry, earth, tobacco and tar flavors. Dense tannins lend support as this stretches out nicely on the finish. Sleek and almost racy in style, with tobacco and mineral elements lingering. Best from 2023 through 2040.

This has some good depth for 2014 with darker cherries delivering a stronger impression. The aromas of fresh fruit are lightly spiced and lead to a palate that has a firm and slightly chewy edge.
About. The Cogno family has been making wine for four generations in Piedmont. In 1990, Elvio Cogno left a long and fruitful partnership with the venerable Barolo producer Marcarini at La Morra and bought a splendid, historic 18th-century farmhouse on the top of Bricco Ravera, a hill near Novello in the Langhe area. (Novello is one of the 11 communes in which Barolo is produced.) The farm was surrounded by 11 hectares (27.18 acres) of steeply sloped vineyards. Elvio restored the manor, converted the old granaries to wine cellars and founded his eponymous winery. For the next 20 years he devoted himself to the winemaking traditions handed down to him by his father and grandfather.
Elvio, in turn, has now passed the torch to his daughter, Nadia, and her husband, Valter Fissore, who has worked beside Elvio for 25 years. Following in the footsteps of Elvio the maestro, Elvio Cogno winery continues to produce elegant wines without altering the traditions, styles and flavors of the Langhe, with its breathtaking quilted landscape and unique grape varieties.
The Elvio Cogno winery sits at the top of Bricco Ravera, a hill near Novello in the Langhe area of Piedmont, one of the 11 communes in which Barolo is produced. Ravera is the finest cru of Novello, encircling the top of the hill and the winery, reaching a 380-meter (1,246-foot) elevation, with breathtaking views in all directions.
