2019 Domaine de l'Idylle Gamay Rouge AOC Savoie
Blend: 100% Gamay
From: Vin de Savoie, Savoie, France

In 1840, François Tiollier bought the land where fruit trees and vines flourished already. He added the mansion, took a good look at his creation and christened it Domaine de l’Idylle. Idylle means love story. Unable to have children, the property skipped a generation to his nephew Albert. Albert Tiollier, focused more on wine production than fruit and his efforts were recognised in 1920 with the first of many medals for Domaine de l’Idylle. Before the Second World War, Albert handed the reins to his son André who, together with his wife Henriette, became the first generation to bottle the wine on site. This was an important step in the development of these authentic but lesser known local grape varieties.

In 1975, the next generation saw brothers Philippe and François Tiollier in charge and expanding the vineyard to its current size of 50 acres, devoted exclusively to wine production. The brothers added new wines to the range and began international distribution which today spreads far beyond their native Savoie to Asia and the USA. In 2011, Philippe’s eldest son, Sylvain Tiollier, joined the team to add a hint of modernity to the great traditions of Domaine de l’Idylle.

In 2010, a new underground cellar was built combining tradition and modernity to honour the sacred grapes; focusing on gravity flow and strict temperature controls. It is this attention to detail at every stage of the wine making process which limits the need for additives and ensures the character of each of the wines is preserved. Most of the wines are matured in stainless steel vats, for 3 to 12 months, thereby preserving the wine in the purist states. Some of the production is also aged in locally produced oak barrels.

Regionally the light, fresh style of the wine is directly related to the alpine terroir of Savoie. Most of the vineyards that are included in the appellation are planted on steep, south facing slopes, where favorable sunlight exposure and excellent drainage make for perfect ripening conditions despite the cold continental climate.

The region's myriad mountain ranges offer protection from northwesterly weather systems. The presence of lakes Bourget and Geneva, as well as the upper Rhône river, further moderate the climate. Most Vin de Savoie vineyards can be found on limestone based soils. These are adept at storing heat during the day and reflecting it back onto the vines at night. Characteristically, the loose scree soils are thin with little water holding capacity, an important consideration given the relatively high rainfall levels in Savoie. Limited water leads to a reduction in vigor and yield, increasing the quality of the grapes that are produced

Taste: Beautiful ruby red colour with purplish reflections, the nose is dominated by notes of small red fruits, strawberry-raspberry, a hint of menthol brings a nice freshness to this bouquet. The palate is frank and round, the tannins are discreet and the finish is reminiscent of red fruits

Pairing: This wine will pair beautifully with a variety of dishes, it could be at the beginning as an aperitif alongside cold cuts and cheese, or paired with entrees such as roast turkey with cranberry sauce (gobble gobble!), grilled salmon fillet with roasted fennel, or moroccan lamb tagine with apricot. For less meat forward options, curries, mushrooms, pizza, salads, spicy dishes, roasted vegetables.
