Let's get straight into it. Once you pop the cork, the nose explodes with violets, boysenberry, juniper, rosemary, and sweet pipe tobacco. It's a veritable spice box of aromas. Of the dozens of wines we tasted last week alone, this wine stood out immediately as a no-brainer. We guarantee this to be so immediately satisfying, so explosively fragrant, you'll drop what you're doing at the first pull of the cork.
If this is your first foray into 2018 Bordeaux, you are in for a treat. In the words of Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media: "The best 2018s are positively stunning...[they] are aromatically intense, deep, dark wines that beautifully marry fruit intensity with structure."
This is the sister property to Carine and Franck Richard's "Cru Godard" brand, created to highlight their higher elevation, fuller expressions of organic Bordeaux. The Godard family has been farming here since 1895, first bottling under their estate name in 2002. From the start, their goal was to farm everything naturally; they are Ecocert-Certified organic and integrate biodynamic principles, going far beyond the strictures of organics in order to provide a balanced, healthy ecosystem. They keep bees, use grazing animals, integrate cover crops, add natural teas as fertilizer, and use all ambient yeasts to ferment the wine.
The blend is 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec; everything is done by hand, all naturally, and zero new oak is used in the aging – it's vinified in steel and two-year-old barrels, then aged for one year before bottling.
This is a masterclass into the potential of 2018 Bordeaux, at a steep discount to what many properties will be trading for in the open market.
