2017 Avignonesi Rosso di Montepulciano
Blend: Sangiovese, Syrah, & Colorino
From the Winemaker: “Our main aim is to make terroir-driven wines which express the distinct character of our vineyards. We use indigenous yeasts when we can and pursue subtle wine management to help each wine find its natural path and preserve the characteristics of each grape lot. We ferment and age each lot separately for our classic wines, and only decide on which blend we think will do a particular grape and vintage justice after the ageing process.Starting with harvest 2013, our main vinification and ageing cellar is located at Lodola estate, which we acquired in 2012. Here we keep both the ‘botti,’ which are large barrels made of Slavonian oak and traditionally used for Sangiovese in Tuscany, and the smaller 225 liter casks called "barriques" which are made of French oak.”
The 2017 vintage was extreme in Montepulciano. The frost and the drought have challenged our vineyards a lot, but thanks to the biodynamic practices and to the big efforts of the whole production team, wines show good expression on the nose and a great overall balance.
Taste: This is delicately spicy, with intense aromas of red berry fruits and hints of linden in flower with an elegant touch of violets. The flavor is smooth, complex and long lingering, expressing a beautiful harmony between freshness, acidity and sweetness.
“This is crisp and beautiful with crushed raspberry and lemon-rind aromas and flavors. Medium body. Easy finish. From biodynamically grown grapes.” -James Suckling
Pairing: Grilled or roasted meats, specifically beef, lamb, wild boar, and duck, go best with this wine, as do thick meat sauces made from the same meats and mixed with fresh vegetables and tomatoes. The fat content balances the acidity of the wines perfectly.
