Tasting Notes: The 2019 Barco Reale leads with charming cherry & plum skin aromas that persist on the palate. These fruity notes are balanced with the cassis, cigar box, cedar, and lead pencil nuances of the Cabernets. Fine tannins, lifting acidity, and hints of cinnamon, cloves, licorice, and sassafras join dusty soil notes and reprises of currant and cherry fruit on the Barco Reale’s long, lingering finish.
Pairing: This charming red is fantastic alongside weeknight favorites; burgers, pizza, and the like. We’re going to share a healthy, hearty (not to mention delicious) recipe for another classic, an adaptation of Jamie Oliver’s recipe for Eggplant Parmesan by Marian Burros. It’ll take just about 2 hours and yield 4-5 servings.
Named after the historic Medici property known as "Barco Reale" - meaning Royal Property - which was established in 1626. Today Sangiovese, Cabernet and Canaiolo grow in this ancient area that was a hunting preserve surrounded by walls over 30 miles long. Barco Reale is a younger version of Carmignano that received DOC status in 1994.
